Suncheon-si Achieves '6 Consecutive Years' Award in Sustainable Transportation City Evaluation
Establishing a Model City for Sustainable Transportation
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City (Mayor Heo Seok) won the Excellence Award in this year's Sustainable Transportation City evaluation hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, achieving the remarkable feat of winning for six consecutive years since receiving the Grand Prize in 2015.
The Sustainable Transportation City evaluation is conducted annually by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, assessing 32 transportation indicators related to sustainability such as improvement of transportation safety, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and reduction of traffic congestion costs for 75 local governments with populations over 100,000, selecting outstanding local governments.
Suncheon City, as a transportation hub in the eastern region of Jeollanam-do, experiences frequent traffic congestion and a high rate of traffic accidents due to through traffic to nearby cities and many tourists, yet it has achieved good results through various transportation policy initiatives.
In particular, Suncheon was highly evaluated for introducing smart crosswalks and responsive signal systems to improve traffic safety, as well as for converting vacant urban lots neglected with weeds and trash into resident autonomous parking lots, and for parking sharing projects that open church and public institution parking lots to citizens.

Mayor Heo Seok of Suncheon said, “Our city is implementing various traffic safety policies to create a safe traffic environment free of traffic accidents.” He added, “Next year, we will do our best to make Suncheon even safer through projects such as the establishment of smart intersections.”
