Donations for Intractable Students... Unlicensed Status '3 Million Won Fine'
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Ju Cheol-in] A director of a corporation who collected donations for students with intractable diseases without authorization received a reduced sentence in the appellate trial.
The Changwon District Court Criminal Division 1 (Chief Judge Choi Bok-gyu) announced on the 26th that it overturned the original guilty verdict that sentenced director A (59) of the corporation to a fine of 10 million won for violating the Act on the Collection and Use of Donations, and instead sentenced him to a fine of 3 million won.
Mr. A collected donations totaling approximately 74 million won in three installments from 2013 to 2016 through a corporation established for educational projects for pediatric leukemia and cancer patients, and research projects on systems and policies for welfare enhancement.
However, at the time of collecting the donations, he failed to comply with the current law which requires submitting a usage plan and obtaining approval from the Minister of the Interior and Safety or the head of a local government.
It was confirmed that a significant portion of the donations collected by the corporation was used for patients with pediatric cancer, rare and intractable diseases, and others.

The court stated, “The defendant had an obligation to be aware of matters related to the Donation Act but ignored this, resulting in hindering the maturation of donation culture. However, considering that no particular illegal acts related to the donations were found, the sentence is determined comprehensively.”
