Pohang City Fully Cancels Homigot Korean New Year's Sunrise Event... Sunrise Plaza Temporarily Closed
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-ho] Pohang City, Gyeongbuk Province, will completely close Homigot Square for two days from the 31st of this month to January 1st next year to prevent the influx of sunrise tourists from across the country.
According to Pohang City on the 23rd, fences will be installed around Homigot Square and the parking lot to completely block tourist access, and on January 1st, a so-called 'refusal operation' will be carried out together with the police.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration forecast, the temperature on the 1st is expected to be minus 7 degrees Celsius, with a wind chill below minus 10 degrees. Due to the harsh weather and COVID-19, for citizens who cannot watch the sunrise in person, Pohang City has prepared various attractions that can be viewed from home.
Through the local cable TV HCN and Pohang City's YouTube channel (Pohang City Hall), the sunrise festival will be replaced with a live broadcast under the catchphrase "Seeing the Hope of Korea from the Eastern End of the Korean Peninsula."
Starting with a daeguk (large drum) and hwago (barrel drum) performance by the percussion group 'Kwae,' a three-way live broadcast of the New Year's sunrise will be shown from three locations: Homigot, Yeongildae Beach, and Igari Anchor Observatory. Then, Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang, Chairman Jeong Hae-jong of the Pohang City Council, and local members of the National Assembly will deliver video New Year's greetings.
