[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] Sampyo Group, a leading company in basic construction materials, has become the first in the domestic industry to receive Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification for its dry cement mortar (KS L 5220) products. This achievement is evaluated as an enhancement of green technology competitiveness and customer satisfaction based on strengthened quality control of the products.
On the 22nd, Sampyo Group announced that three types of dry cement mortar products (general plastering, general flooring, high-strength flooring) have obtained the industry's first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification.
Dry cement mortar is a construction material made by pre-mixing raw materials such as cement, sand, and admixtures, which can be used immediately on-site by simply adding water and mixing.
The Environmental Product Declaration is a system led by the Ministry of Environment and operated by the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute, which quantitatively displays and discloses the environmental impact throughout the entire process from raw material extraction to production, transportation, distribution, use, and disposal of products. It serves as an indicator for consumers to compare and select environmentally friendly products.
This is the first time in the industry that dry cement mortar products have obtained EPD certification, which is regarded as a result of the company's eco-friendly management. In the future, all public buildings will undergo Green Building Certification (G-SEED) evaluation, and using building materials that have obtained either the first-stage Environmental Product Declaration or the second-stage Low Carbon Product certification will provide additional scoring benefits.
Certification as a green building also offers benefits such as relaxed building standards and tax reductions. Following the acquisition of the first-stage EPD certification for dry cement mortar products, Sampyo Group plans to pursue the second-stage Low Carbon Product certification.
Previously, in September, Sampyo Group received Low Carbon Product certification for three specifications of ready-mixed concrete products (25-24-150, 25-27-150, 25-30-150), and in November last year, it obtained EPD certification for four specifications of ready-mixed concrete products (24, 27, 30, 35 MPa).
Accordingly, Sampyo Group has officially been recognized for the eco-friendly excellence of its three dry cement mortar products newly certified with EPD, along with its existing ready-mixed concrete product certifications, which are among the most widely used products at construction sites.
