CJ Chairman Lee Jae-hyun unlikely to return as registered executive... Daughter and son-in-law take forefront to accelerate 3rd generation management
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Seon-ae] CJ Group Chairman Lee Jae-hyun is unlikely to be listed as a registered executive next year as well.
Son Kyung-sik, Chairman of the Korea Employers Federation, said at a press conference held on the 18th at the Federation's headquarters in Mapo-gu, Seoul, in response to a question about Chairman Lee's return as a registered executive next year, "There are no plans to register him as a registered executive."
Chairman Lee returned to management in May 2017 but has not yet been listed as a registered executive. Before being detained in August 2013 on charges of embezzlement and breach of trust, he served as CEO of CJ and CJ CheilJedang, and as a registered director of six major affiliates including CJ Logistics. After that, he sequentially stepped down from all registered director positions within CJ Group, and the leadership shifted to a system led by Chairman Son.
Meanwhile, CJ Group is accelerating preparations for third-generation management through the recent regular executive personnel reshuffle. Eldest daughter Lee Kyung-hoo, Executive Director of CJ ENM, was promoted to Vice President level. This promotion comes three years after her promotion to Executive Director in November 2017. Born in 1985, Executive Director Lee completed her bachelor's degree in French literature and master's degree in psychology at Columbia University in the United States. She joined the holding company CJ's business team in July 2011, then moved to CJ O Shopping (035760), and in 2016 worked as head of integrated marketing at CJ's U.S. regional headquarters. Last year, her husband, Executive Director Jung Jong-hwan of CJ, was promoted to Vice President level, creating a vice president couple within the group.
Vice President Lee is expected to take on the important role of inheriting and developing the group's content business, which had been managed by her aunt, Vice Chairman Lee Mi-kyung. As she takes the helm of marketing at CJ ENM, it is anticipated that she will succeed Vice Chairman Lee, who played a key role in growing CJ into a leading Korean Wave cultural content company.
The CJ Group explained that Vice President Lee's promotion was based on her achievements in handling CJ ENM's brand strategy, producing killer content, and establishing K-CON, which contributed to CJ ENM's leap as a global content company.

However, there was no return to management for the eldest son, Lee Seon-ho, Deputy General Manager of CJ CheilJedang. Earlier, Lee was arrested and indicted last year on charges of marijuana smuggling, and in February of this year, he was sentenced to three years in prison with a four-year suspended sentence on appeal and is currently keeping a low profile. Inside and outside the group, attention was focused on whether former Deputy General Manager Lee would take on a position again, but it is believed that the relatively short period of self-restraint was a burden, leading to his exclusion from personnel appointments.
