This statement was made in response to Gwangju Mayor Lee Yong-seop's announcement on the 9th that he would postpone the plan to relocate Gwangju Civil Airport and decide the military airport relocation issue and the timing of the civil airport relocation together through a four-party consultative body.
In the statement, the county council expressed "deep regret over Gwangju City's decision to link the relocation of Gwangju Civil Airport with the military airport relocation issue and decide the timing of the civil airport relocation," and urged "the immediate withdrawal of such an irrational decision and the unconditional integrated relocation of the civil airport as originally agreed."
They also raised their voices, saying, "Using the results of the public opinion survey by the Gwangju Citizens' Rights Committee, which is merely a facade, they have broken their previous promises as easily as turning over their hands," and "This is an act that cruelly tramples and mocks the expectations and hopes of 2 million Jeollanam-do residents and 90,000 Muan County residents."
They continued, "Although the integrated relocation of the civil airport has nothing to do with the military airport relocation issue, Gwangju Metropolitan City tries to link the two issues together," and said, "Gwangju City shows the height of arrogance by going against national policy and betraying trust without any justification or cause."
In particular, they criticized, "This decision came from a bizarre political calculation," and questioned, "Whether the so-called coexistence that Gwangju City talks about can really be called mutual cooperation and common prosperity."
Finally, they concluded the statement by urging the implementation of the agreement again, saying, "We hope that Gwangju City's decision, which lacks legitimacy and justification, will not become an obstacle to establishing the nation's century-long plan of city and province integration."
