[Weather] Heavy Snow Expected from Sunday in Central Regions... Up to 7cm Accumulation Possible
Nationwide Severe Cold Next Week... Morning Temperatures Below -10°C
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chunhan] On Sunday the 13th, heavy snow will begin in the central region, and next week, a severe cold wave will spread nationwide.
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasted on the 11th that snow clouds will form due to a low-pressure system approaching Korea from the northern Yellow Sea, affecting the central region from early morning. Currently, cold air below minus 25 degrees Celsius at an altitude of about 5 km is approaching Korea, causing snow clouds to form over the Yellow Sea and temperatures to drop significantly.
The low-pressure system will move southeast, affecting the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Yeongseo from dawn to morning on the 13th, Chungcheong Province and northern Gyeongbuk from morning to afternoon, and other southern regions from afternoon to evening. Accordingly, snow will accumulate in the central region, Jeonbuk, and inland Gyeongbuk, but in other areas where ground-level temperatures are above freezing, rain is more likely.
The central region is expected to receive 2 to 7 cm of heavy snow, prompting a heavy snow advisory. Expected snowfall amounts are 2 to 7 cm in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Gangwon Yeongseo, inland Chungcheong, northern inland Gyeongbuk, and the five western islands of the Yellow Sea; 1 to 3 cm in the western coast of Chungnam, Jeonbuk, Gangwon East Coast, and southern inland Gyeongbuk. From the 14th, when the snow in the central region ceases, a continental high-pressure system will expand, continuously bringing cold air, developing snow clouds over the Yellow Sea that are likely to move into the western coast until the next day.
From the 14th to 15th, the western coast of Chungnam, Jeolla Province, and Jeju Island will experience snow clouds from the Yellow Sea, while Ulleungdo and Dokdo will receive snow clouds from the East Sea, resulting in heavy snowfall. As the duration of cold air inflow lengthens and snow clouds continue to develop, the western coast of Jeolla, Jeju mountainous areas, Ulleungdo, and Dokdo are expected to receive up to 20 cm of heavy snow, prompting heavy snow advisories.
From the 4th to the 15th, cold air descending from the north will affect the entire country, bringing the coldest weather of this winter so far. Temperatures will gradually drop from the afternoon of the 13th, with morning lows on the 14th plunging 5 to 10 degrees Celsius lower than the previous day nationwide, leading to cold wave advisories in some areas.

The central region will record temperatures below minus 10 degrees Celsius, and many places will have daytime highs remaining below freezing. With strong cold air inflow and strong winds, the wind chill temperature may feel 7 to 10 degrees colder, so special attention to health management is advised.
