Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) is installing sound speakers and conducting music broadcasts for residents who walk or exercise along the Jungnangcheon riverside.
As the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic deepens psychological depression and strengthened social distancing measures have made indoor sports facilities inaccessible, residents are relieving their frustration by using outdoor exercise spots such as the Cheonggyecheon riverside.
In response, the district will comfort and encourage residents by attaching sound speakers to streetlights along the Jungnangcheon riverside walking trail and playing various genres of music. Starting from the 30th, a DJ will also introduce residents' stories during the music broadcasts.
The district completed the installation of 60 speakers by early December along a 2.4 km section from under Yongbi Bridge to Salgoti Sports Park, which takes about 20 minutes on foot. Music broadcasts are customized by time slot, playing classical, latest popular songs, and genre music three times daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Residents can submit their stories via YouTube, and three times a week, the DJ will personally introduce these stories and play requested songs.
Story submissions are available through the Seongdong-gu Office YouTube channel starting from the 21st.
A district official said, “We prepared this to help residents enjoy outdoor exercise while feeling warmth by listening to stories from nearby neighbors and refreshing their mood with music, hoping they overcome these difficult times well. We also plan to use this system for disaster broadcasts to prevent safety accidents caused by unpredictable monsoons and flooding along the Jungnangcheon riverside.”
