Jordan Side Hopes to Resume Korea-GCC FTA Negotiations Suspended Since 2009 and Enhance Cooperation
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha held meetings on the 5th with Ayman Hussein Al-Safadi, Jordan's Foreign Minister, and Nayef Al-Hajraf, Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), during her attendance at the 16th Manama Dialogue (4th-6th).
Minister Kang discussed bilateral issues, including the upcoming P4G Summit to be held in Korea next year, and recent developments in the Middle East with Foreign Minister Al-Safadi.
In particular, Minister Kang delivered a letter of invitation from President Moon Jae-in inviting King Abdullah of Jordan to the P4G Summit scheduled to be held in Seoul in May next year, and requested Jordan's participation as a member country of GGGI. In response, Minister Al-Safadi expressed gratitude for Korea's invitation and replied that they would engage in close consultations.
The two ministers expressed satisfaction with the close cooperation between the two countries on humanitarian support issues, such as assistance for Syrian refugees, and exchanged in-depth views on recent Middle East developments, including the Israel-Palestine issue.
Furthermore, Minister Kang stated that Korea and GCC member countries have developed a mutually beneficial relationship by closely cooperating in areas such as energy and infrastructure construction, and expressed hope that both sides would strengthen exchanges and communication, including holding the Korea-GCC Strategic Dialogue.

Secretary-General Nayef of the GCC responded that Korea is an important partner for the GCC, and despite the COVID-19 situation, it is necessary to strengthen cooperation with Korea. He also suggested further developing bilateral cooperation through the resumption of Korea-GCC FTA negotiations, which have been suspended since 2009.
