Indonesian Minister of Social Affairs Investigated for COVID-19 Bribery Allegations
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] The Indonesian Minister of Social Affairs is reportedly under investigation for bribery related to the COVID-19 support program.
According to foreign media on the 6th, Juliari Batubara, the Minister of Social Affairs, voluntarily appeared at the headquarters of the Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in the capital Jakarta early that morning and cooperated with the investigation.
Earlier, the Corruption Eradication Commission held a press conference the previous night, stating that Minister Juliari is suspected of illegally receiving more than 17 billion rupiah (approximately 1.3 billion KRW) from two distribution companies related to the government's COVID-19 support. In connection with this allegation, the commission also named four other officials besides Minister Juliari.
Last month, the Corruption Eradication Commission arrested Edi Prabowo, the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, on corruption charges.
