Experts warned that the aftereffects of the late November Thanksgiving travel and family gatherings will be fully reflected this month, and combined with the Christmas holiday season, will fuel the spread of COVID-19.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), expressed deep concern about the third wave of COVID-19, stating, "I am really very worried," and predicted that "due to the impact of Thanksgiving travel, family gatherings, and indoor social meetings during winter, the spread will peak in 2 to 3 weeks and reach its highest point during the Christmas holiday season."
He cited the COVID death projection model from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington School of Medicine, warning that total deaths could exceed 500,000 by April next year.
