Samsung Display Signs 'Water Quality Protection Agreement' with Chungnam Province and Asan City
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Samsung Display announced on the 3rd that it has signed a 'Water Quality Improvement and Water Reuse Agreement' with Chungcheongnam-do Province and Asan City to protect water quality in the Chungcheongnam-do region.
Through this agreement, Samsung Display will supply discharged water (approximately 20,000 tons per day) for reuse and install artificial plant islands in the nearby Garakbawi Reservoir to further improve water quality before reuse. The improved water will be supplied by Asan City as maintenance water for rivers (Maegokcheon, Yongpyeongcheon) with insufficient water sources and for agricultural use.
Samsung Display's Asan Campus uses raw water from Daecheong Dam for display manufacturing and discharges about 140,000 tons of water per day into Gokgyocheon in Asan City after treatment through processing facilities.
Samsung Display explained that the reuse of discharged water means that the water used in the manufacturing process is treated cleanly. Since the establishment of the Asan Campus, Samsung Display has operated by establishing standards stricter than legal requirements for rigorous water management. In addition, it has hired domestic and international experts including PhDs and professional engineers to operate a dedicated technical team, aiming to advance water treatment and ensure stable operation. Facility investments have been continuously made, totaling approximately 400 billion KRW. As a result, the treated discharged water quality is maintained at less than 30% of the legal standard (based on organic substances), and 24-hour real-time monitoring results are continuously transmitted to the relevant authorities.
Besides treating water used in the process, Samsung Display is actively pursuing various eco-friendly activities for water resource management. Water used in the Asan Campus process is reused as process water through its own purification facilities, and water treated at the wastewater treatment plant is also utilized as raw water for the industrial complex through purification facilities using ultrafiltration membrane technology, actively reducing water resource usage.
