Prime Minister Jeong: "Critical Juncture This Weekend... Additional Quarantine Measures to Be Prepared If Necessary"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said on the 2nd, "We adjusted the social distancing levels twice on the 19th and 24th of last month, and local governments are also implementing additional quarantine strengthening measures, so we need to observe the effects a little longer," adding, "The government will preemptively review additional quarantine strengthening measures so that they can be implemented at any time if deemed necessary."
At the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters (CDSCH) meeting on COVID-19 held at the Government Seoul Office on the same day, Prime Minister Chung stated, "This weekend will be a critical turning point to determine whether the spread will increase or subside."
He emphasized, "This wave of infection is characterized by the simultaneous spread of COVID-19 in almost all aspects of daily life, so it is difficult to contain the spread by government quarantine efforts alone," and urged, "All citizens must participate and cooperate actively with the mindset that they are the main agents of quarantine."
He continued, "Only when the government's 'precision quarantine' and the people's 'participatory quarantine' create a synergy effect can we overcome this severe crisis," and stressed, "Thorough quarantine must be carried out even in small-scale facilities and small businesses where it is difficult for quarantine authorities and local governments to reach individually."
Prime Minister Chung said, "Tomorrow, the college entrance exam (Suneung) will be held nationwide. To all examinees who have prepared for the exam under more difficult conditions than any other year due to the COVID-19 situation, and to the parents who have supported them, you have truly worked hard," and added, "I hope you finish the remaining day well under thorough quarantine and achieve a successful conclusion."
He also instructed, "The Ministry of Education, local education offices, and schools should meticulously manage the sites so that examinees can safely complete the Suneung exam and be fully prepared for any unexpected situations."
