[Asia Economy Reporter Sung Kiho] Chinese media reported on the 30th that U.S. authorities are investigating whether the crew members of Chinese vessels docked at U.S. ports are members of the Chinese Communist Party.
Chinese media claimed, "Relevant U.S. agencies are conducting investigations asking Chinese vessel crew members about their Communist Party membership," adding, "These investigations last for several hours and are conducted repeatedly." They also reported that flight crew members operating flights to the U.S. have undergone the same investigations.
According to the media, from September until the 11th of this month, crew members of 21 Chinese vessels and 16 aircraft were questioned about their Communist Party membership.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the report as true and criticized such actions as damaging bilateral relations.
Hua Chunying, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated at a regular briefing, "The U.S. enforcement of such measures stirs ideological confrontation and undermines normal personnel exchanges between the two countries," adding, "This is a serious political provocation against China."
