On the 27th (local time), The New York Times cited three U.S. intelligence sources, reporting that Israel was mentioned as the background to Fakhrizadeh's assassination.
Fakhrizadeh was assassinated in a terrorist attack in the small town of Absard near Tehran, the capital of Iran, on the same day.
The Times stated that it is unclear how much the U.S. knew in advance about this operation. However, it recalled that the U.S. and Israel have been sharing information related to Iran. The Times added that the White House did not respond to questions about this incident.

According to the Associated Press, the Iranian Foreign Minister also emphasized that there is considerable evidence pointing to Israel as behind this assassination. Israel has not commented on the assassination.
