20s Taiwanese Woman Dies in Drunk Driving Accident...Driver Sent to Prosecution in Custody
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] A man in his 50s who fatally struck a Taiwanese woman while driving under the influence has been sent to prosecution in custody.
According to the police on the 26th, the Suseo Police Station in Seoul sent Mr. A, who is accused of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (dangerous driving causing death), to prosecution in custody on the 19th.
Mr. A is accused of fatally hitting a woman in her 20s from Taiwan while driving under the influence near Dogok-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul on the 6th.
A police official stated, "We will continue to conduct strict investigations into accidents caused by drunk driving, and we will strive to prevent drunk driving accidents through vehicle seizures of habitual drunk drivers and investigations into accomplices of drunk driving."
Regarding this incident, a post titled "A 28-year-old young man died in an accident caused by a drunk driver while crossing a crosswalk" was uploaded on the Blue House National Petition Board. As of 7:30 a.m. on the same day, more than 127,000 people had agreed to the petition.
The petitioner said, "On the evening of November 6, 2020, a 28-year-old young and promising man was crossing the street at a green pedestrian signal on a crosswalk when he was hit by a drunk driver's vehicle and died instantly without any chance to react." She added, "She was my close friend and neighbor, a foreign friend who had been in Korea for about five years, and a student who studied and worked hard for her dreams more than anyone else."

She continued, "My friend, who has already gone to heaven, cannot come back, but I only hope that not a single precious life will be lost in the horrific drunk driving accidents that may happen in the future," and added, "I urge stronger punishments for crimes related to drunk driving so that this tragic incident will never be repeated to my family, my friends, or my loved ones."
