Jangseong-gun Promotes 'Cherry Specialized Crop Cultivation Project'
[Jangseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jo Hangyu] Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Yoo Doo-seok) announced on the 23rd that it has recently been selected for the Jeollanam-do Agricultural Technology Institute's public project (1 city, 1 county, 1 specialized crop promotion) and will promote the ‘Cherry Specialized Crop Promotion Project’ starting next year.
The total project cost is approximately 1 billion KRW and will be implemented over three years until 2023.
Cherry is a premium fruit known as the ‘diamond among fruits’ and is favored by people of all ages due to its antioxidant and antithrombotic effects, as well as its benefits for anti-aging and weight control.
However, cultivation is somewhat challenging, requiring specialized cultivation techniques such as pruning suited to the characteristics of each variety and pest and disease control.
Additionally, initial costs such as rain shelter facilities and seedling purchases are also incurred.
Previously, since 2015, the county selected cherry as a new income crop and has improved cultivation techniques through active information sharing centered on the Cherry Research Association. Currently, cherries are cultivated on 5.5 hectares by 21 farms in the region.
Through this promotion project, the county plans to provide customized consulting to farms covering the entire process from professional cultivation technique education to distribution, planting manuals, and sixth industrialization.
Dedicated rain shelter facilities for producing quality cherries will also be supported.
The county plans to cultivate cherries in three colors?Yellow, Red, and Black?to secure competitiveness in the domestic market, which is being encroached upon by imported cherries.
