Seongdong-gu Ttukdo Market and Geumnam Market: Comprehensive Renovation of Old Wiring in 240 Stores
550 'Smart Fire Alarm Systems' Installed, Fire Extinguishers Provided, and Safety Inspections Conducted for Thorough Fire Prevention
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) has carried out a wiring renovation project targeting individual stores within traditional markets over two months from September to November to prevent fires that can easily lead to large-scale damage.
This project was promoted by securing a budget of 180 million KRW following the selection of the traditional market wiring renovation project by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, targeting a total of 240 stores including 139 stores in Ttukdo Market and 101 stores in Geumnam Market.
In particular, considering that more than half of the fire causes in traditional markets are short circuits and ground faults, in addition to renovating old wiring in individual stores, maintenance was simultaneously carried out on fire hazard facilities such as old or defective distribution panels and LED light replacements.
Earlier, at the end of last year, the district supported a total of 550 stores in four traditional markets and shopping districts?Yongdap Shopping Market (170 stores), Haengdang Market Shopping District (150 stores), Ttukdo Market (133 stores), and Geumnam Market (99 stores)?by integrating fire alarms with IoT technology to enable one-stop fire detection, reporting, and situation dissemination through the ‘Smart Fire Alarm System.’
Also, in January this year, 600 fire extinguishers were distributed, and safety inspections on facilities, electricity, and gas were conducted to strengthen fire prevention measures, focusing on the safety of merchants and customers within traditional markets.
Additionally, as the first local government to do so, automatic external defibrillators (AEDs), emergency equipment capable of achieving the ‘miracle of 4 minutes,’ were installed in nine traditional markets, receiving great responses from market merchants and users.

Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, emphasized the importance of safety, stating, “Although the surrounding conditions have improved recently through facility modernization projects in traditional markets, they are fundamentally vulnerable to fire as they consist of mixed-use commercial-residential buildings over 30 years old.” He also added, “To revitalize traditional markets that have been stagnated due to COVID-19, we will take the lead in activating the local economy through delivery service support, shopping events, and the distribution of Seongdong Love Gift Certificates.”
