Arrest Warrant Issued for Cargo Truck Driver Involved in Fatal Accident in Children's Protection Zone
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] The police have requested an arrest warrant for a truck driver who struck three siblings and their mother with a cargo truck in a school zone, causing casualties.
On the 18th, Gwangju Bukbu Police Station announced that they have applied for an arrest warrant for a man in his 50s, Mr. A, on charges of causing death and injury to three people (including the death of a 2-year-old girl) in violation of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes.
Mr. A is accused of hitting three siblings and their mother in their 30s with his vehicle while they were crossing an unmarked crosswalk in a school zone near an apartment complex in Unam-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju, at around 8:45 a.m. the previous day.
As a result of the accident, the 2-year-old girl in the stroller died, and her older sister and their mother in their 30s sustained serious injuries and were transported to a hospital for treatment.
The youngest son, who was riding in a two-seater stroller with his older sister, was reportedly not seriously injured as the stroller was pushed to the side of the vehicle.
Mr. A had stopped his cargo truck right in front of the crosswalk due to traffic congestion, and when the congestion cleared, he failed to notice the family in front of the vehicle and started moving, causing the accident.
The family had paused midway while crossing the crosswalk because vehicles kept passing in the opposite lane.
Mr. A is scheduled to undergo a pre-arrest suspect interrogation (substantive review of the arrest warrant) on the same day.
Meanwhile, the location of this accident was also the site of a previous incident in May, where an SUV struck a 7-year-old elementary school student, causing serious injuries.
