View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The Busan ‘Gijang-gun Seaweed Breeding Convergence Research Center’ will actively promote the establishment of a ‘Marine Fisheries Specialized Small Library’ starting next year.
The Gijang Research Center gained momentum for the project as 100 million KRW of national funding was included in the 2021 National Balanced Development Special Account budget.
The Gijang Research Center, the only seaweed-specialized research institution among basic local governments, plans to build a ‘Marine Fisheries Specialized Small Library’ where the general public can easily access professional knowledge and information related to marine fisheries all in one place.
The ‘Marine Small Library’ will be set up on the 4th floor of the Gijang Research Center with a budget of 140 million KRW (100 million KRW national funds, 40 million KRW county funds), featuring a children’s section and a general public section, and is scheduled to be completed and opened in the second half of 2021.
Since January, the Gijang Research Center has been informing marine fisheries-related universities and public institutions about the small library project to collect various marine fisheries-related books and materials, receiving donations of various publications and books.
Currently, it holds about 3,400 marine fisheries-related books, including research reports and booklets donated by the Korea Maritime Institute, the Marine Ecology Technology Research Institute, and others.
Going forward, the center plans to focus on securing more materials to fulfill the functions and roles of the small library.
Organizations or individuals wishing to donate marine fisheries-related materials can visit the Gijang Research Center website.
The Marine Fisheries Academy Hall was created this June with an investment of 400 million KRW in county funds, transforming the entire space from the basement first floor to the fourth floor of the Gijang Research Center building’s corridors into a multifunctional area for exhibitions and experiences.
It includes △ the history and ecology of Gijang seaweed and kelp △ stories about Gijang’s seaweed △ product introductions from local seaweed production and processing companies △ interesting stories about marine creatures △ an experience activity room for children and others to participate directly △ a children’s archive hall △ and a space for professional education and information exchange for fishermen.

A research center official said, “Since marine fisheries-related information is generally perceived as unfamiliar and difficult, we will link various experience and education programs to make the library a marine fisheries-friendly cultural space combining interest and fun.”
