People Power Party: "The restructuring of Gwanghwamun Square should be decided by the new mayor taking office next year"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The People Power Party criticized Seoul City's plan to invest 80 billion won in the Gwanghwamun Square restructuring project, stating that "the newly inaugurated mayor next year should review and decide on this matter."
On the 17th, Park Sung-joong, chairman of the People Power Party Seoul Metropolitan Committee, expressed significant regret toward Seoul City, saying, "It seems as if they are hastily pushing this through to uphold the legacy of former Mayor Park Won-soon."
Chairman Park said this announcement was a 'hasty administration' made by the acting mayor, and "it is questionable why Seoul City intends to rush a major project involving 80 billion won of citizens' tax money, which should be promoted by the new mayor taking office in April next year."
He added, "It is a waste of public funds to overturn the square again by investing 80 billion won after spending 70 billion won to create it in 2009," and "Although the current square was established during Mayor Oh Se-hoon's term in 2009 with 70 billion won, the reasons and grounds for the restructuring are unclear."

Chairman Park stated, "It is an overreach for an acting mayor with only five months left in office to push forward an important project," and "Gwanghwamun Square, which has been a symbol of Seoul's 600-year history since the idea of creating the square first emerged in 1994, represents the face of the nation. It is questionable whether it is appropriate for an acting mayor, not an official mayor, to decide on the restructuring of such a significant place."
