Korea-US Prepare 2nd Guidebook for New Southern Policy-Indo-Pacific Strategy Cooperation: "Continuous Development of Both Countries' Regional Initiatives"
Cooperation Status in Key Areas of the New Southern Policy: Prosperity, People, and Peace
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Ko Yoon-joo, Director General of the North American Affairs Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, discussed cooperation between Korea's New Southern Policy and the Indo-Pacific Strategy with Marc Knapper, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, who is currently visiting Korea, on the 13th, and prepared a 2nd Fact Sheet summarizing achievements over the past year.
Both sides evaluated the productive discussions held at this week's Korea-U.S. Foreign Ministers' Meeting and expressed hope that in-depth discussions on various initiatives to enhance regional cooperation would take place at the East Asia Summit (EAS) on the 14th, while consulting on mutual interests such as the linkage and cooperation between Korea's New Southern Policy and the U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategy.
In particular, both parties appreciated the preparation of the 2nd Fact Sheet summarizing the achievements over the past year as a result of the two governments' progress in practical cooperation based on the commitment to cooperation between Korea's New Southern Policy and the U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategy declared at the Korea-U.S. Summit in June last year.
The 2nd Fact Sheet includes progress in concrete cooperation between Korea's New Southern Policy and the U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategy since last year, covering cooperation between the two countries across the key areas of the New Southern Policy: Prosperity, People, and Peace.
Specific areas of cooperation include development cooperation, infrastructure, energy, digital economy, smart cities, natural resource management, human resource development, anti-corruption, women's empowerment, climate change, health, COVID-19, transnational crime response, drug control, maritime security, cyber security, marine environmental protection, water security, and disaster response and preparedness.
