The ‘Jeonnam Home-type Wee Center’ is a dormitory-style alternative education institution that provides a stable residential space for students in crisis due to family problems such as domestic violence, abuse, and neglect, and supports smooth school life and return to the original family through emotional and psychological support.
Starting with the Suncheon Male Students’ Home-type Wee Center in 2015, this time a space for middle and high school female students has been established.
To ensure operational expertise and connection with the local community, (Corporation) Youth and People was selected as the entrusted operating institution through a public contest held in July for the Female Students’ Home-type Wee Center.
The admission period is 3 to 6 months, and the admission procedure is decided through referrals and on-site consultations/interviews by schools, parents, and students, with a capacity of 15 students. Admitted students can commute to their current schools according to their wishes or participate in customized programs operated by the center.
The center comprehensively supports care, counseling, and educational services including professional counseling, guaranteeing individual learning rights, alternative education, cultural and artistic experiences, and follow-up management. In particular, since the center is located on the site of the artists’ village, it is expected to become an educational space that works together with the village.
In addition to nature-friendly programs such as volunteer activities during the village’s busy farming season and gardening, various art therapy programs such as pottery, dyeing, and tea ceremony experiences will be operated utilizing the human resources of artists.
Lee Byung-sam, Director of Democratic Citizenship Life Education Division, said, “In the current situation where the number of students in family crises is increasing, I hope the Jeonnam Female Students’ Home-type Wee Center will become a warm shelter for these students,” and added, “We will expand various supports so that our children can heal their emotional wounds and adapt healthily to school and daily life.”
