Gangdong-gu Selected as an 'Outstanding Institution' in the 2nd Korea Solar League
Positive Evaluation for Renewable Energy Facility Deployment and Policy Promotion Willingness: Awarded Chairperson's Prize of Local Government Council for Climate Crisis Response and Energy Transition in Basic Local Governments
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) was selected as an excellent local government contributing to the expansion of renewable energy distribution in the ‘2nd Korea Solar League (K-Solar League)’ seeking solar energy champions, and received the ‘Chairman’s Award of the Local Government Council for Climate Crisis Response and Energy Transition.’
The Korea Solar League is a ‘solar energy development competition league’ where organizations, companies, and metropolitan and basic local governments that contributed to the expansion of solar energy distribution and greenhouse gas reduction compete based on their renewable energy distribution achievements and best practices.
Gangdong-gu received high scores across both quantitative indicators such as the distribution of renewable energy facilities and increased power generation, and qualitative indicators including policy implementation will and storytelling.
The district has worked to realize an energy self-reliant city by installing building-type wall solar panels on the exterior walls of the district office to improve energy efficiency, and by establishing the ‘Green Energy Division,’ the first dedicated energy policy department among Seoul’s autonomous districts.
Additionally, based on public-private cooperation, it has expanded energy self-reliant villages and solar mini power plants, and operates various programs such as the renewable energy experience education center Energy Maru, eco-friendly energy tours, and energy diagnosis consulting to foster residents’ empathy and participation.
Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, stated, “Energy green transition is essential to overcome the climate crisis,” and added, “We will create a sustainable ‘Green City Gangdong’ through bold actions that drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and expand the distribution of renewable energy.”
Meanwhile, this competition was hosted by the Local Government Council for Climate Crisis Response and Energy Transition, Korea Energy Agency, and National Council for Sustainable Development, organized by the National Federation of Citizen Power Cooperatives and the National Network for Regional Energy Transition, and sponsored by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Ministry of Environment, Energy Information Culture Foundation, Korea Photovoltaic Industry Association, and Hanwha Q CELLS.
As a result of the competition held for 17 metropolitan local governments, 226 basic local governments, and the private sector, awards were confirmed for 6 local governments and 6 private organizations.
