Jeon Nam-do Councilor Lee Kwang-il Urges Measures to Address Delays in School Asbestos Removal
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] On the 9th, Lee Gwang-il, a member of the Education Committee of the Jeonnam Provincial Council, pointed out the sluggish progress of asbestos removal projects in frontline schools during the administrative audit of the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education's regional education support offices (Yeosu, Gwangyang, Damyang, Gokseong, Gurye, Goheung) held on the 6th, and urged the establishment of measures to resolve the issue.
Assemblyman Lee stated, “Although the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education has been continuously promoting asbestos removal projects since 2015 in accordance with the Ministry of Education's plan to achieve asbestos-free status by 2027, in the case of Yeosu in 2020, the removal rate was only 36%, making it practically impossible to create asbestos-free schools by 2027.”
He also pointed out after reviewing the data submitted by the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education that “the asbestos removal rate in the Yeosu support office is significantly lower than the Jeonnam average school asbestos removal rate,” and demanded measures and counterplans to address this.
