Myanmar General Election 'Aung San Suu Kyi' NLD "Landslide Victory... Secures Seats for Return to Power" (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Eun-byeol] In the Myanmar general election held on the 8th (local time), the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD), led by State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, reportedly secured enough seats to regain power.
According to AFP and other sources on the 9th, NLD spokesperson Myo Nyunt stated, "The NLD has secured the 322 seats necessary to become the majority party in the parliament," adding, "We thank the people. This is an encouraging result both for the people and for the party." He also expressed gratitude to the public.
In another interview, the spokesperson said, "According to reports from party officials nationwide, the party appears to have achieved an overwhelming victory," and "We are also expecting to break the record of 390 seats won in the 2015 general election."
However, the Union Election Commission (UEC) has not yet announced the official vote count. The largest opposition party linked to the military, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), stated that they are currently gathering information and will not comment at this time.
In this election, a total of 476 members are elected, including 161 senators and 315 representatives. Although the total number of parliament members is 664, 25% or 166 seats are allocated to the military by the constitution, so 498 members are elected excluding the military's 166 seats.
The UEC canceled elections in most areas of western Rakhine State and other regions on the 16th of last month due to security concerns, reducing the number of elected members by 22. The NLD must secure more than 322 seats to regain power.
