[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Min-young] In one of the key battleground states in the U.S. presidential election, Georgia, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has overtaken President Donald Trump by a margin of 917 votes, according to U.S. media outlets including CNN, Fox News, and The New York Times (NYT) on the 6th (local time).
Georgia, with 99% of the votes counted, is a crucial battleground state where President Trump and candidate Biden are tied at 49.4% of the vote, making it an extremely close race.
Georgia, which has 16 electoral votes, initially showed an advantage for President Trump in the early stages of vote counting. He maintained a lead of around 10 percentage points, but late-counted mail-in ballots heavily favored Biden, allowing him to close the gap rapidly.
As the counting neared completion, the vote difference narrowed sharply. As of 3 p.m. Korean time on the day, President Trump was still ahead by about 1,800 votes, but Biden eventually overtook him.
The states where the outcome has not yet been decided are Georgia, Pennsylvania (20 electoral votes), North Carolina (15 electoral votes), and Nevada (6 electoral votes).
In Arizona (11 electoral votes), local media predictions vary. AP, AFP, and Fox News predict that Biden will win Arizona, bringing his total electoral votes to 264. If Biden wins Georgia as well, he would secure 280 electoral votes, surpassing the magic number of 270 needed to win the presidency.

On the other hand, the NYT excludes Arizona and currently reports Biden with 253 electoral votes and Trump with 213. In this scenario, if Biden wins Georgia, he would have 269 electoral votes, just one short of the magic number.
