"Use Recycled Banner Tote Bags"...Jongno-gu Launches Environmental Campaign
Reuse of Calligraphy-Printed Discarded Banners from Korea Arts and Culture Foundation Events... Local Volunteer Group ‘Noksaek Eoullim’ Members Participate in Cutting Work to Transform Them into Shopping Bags
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jongno-gu (District Mayor Kim Young-jong) is conducting a campaign to promote the use of shopping bags made from discarded banners to curb the increased use of disposable products due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic and to create a sustainable local community.
This campaign was launched to provide residents with an opportunity to participate in environmental protection by encouraging the use of recyclable materials.
It is meaningful not only because it contributes to resource recycling but also because it forms a mutual network through collaboration between local demand sites and regional resources.
The discarded banners needed for making the shopping bags are provided by the Korea Arts and Culture Institute.
The banners, printed with calligraphy works used during events by the Korea Arts and Culture Institute, are repurposed by sewing industry workers among the members of the local volunteer group ‘Noksaek Eoullim’ through cutting and sewing processes to create 300 shopping bags.
The produced shopping bags made from discarded banners will be distributed by volunteers along with a message asking for restraint in using disposable plastic bags around the Changsin-dong alley market area in cooperation with the market merchants' association.
Additionally, the Korea Arts and Culture Institute plans to distribute the shopping bags during their events as well.
Furthermore, as part of the ‘Clean Jongno Initiative,’ from the 2nd to the 13th of this month, a two-week evaluation of the ‘Management Status of Habitual Illegal Dumping Sites’ is being conducted with the participation of the Jongno Love Women’s Nuri Group. Forty-nine members of the Women’s Nuri Group are inspecting 169 sites that require focused management due to habitual illegal dumping.
The members are thoroughly checking not only the presence of accumulated garbage but also management plans by each community service center and factors causing illegal dumping, aiming to derive improvement measures and suggestions to be submitted.
