[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] KOTRA, in collaboration with the Seoul Business Agency and the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency, is holding an online business consultation event from the 27th of last month until the 11th of this month to support Korean animation and webtoon companies entering the Chinese market.

Marking the 10th edition of this consultation event, KOTRA partnered with the Beijing Animation and Game Industry Association, Guangzhou Animation, Game & Licensing Association, among others. Targeting 70 Chinese buyers, 20 animation companies and 12 webtoon companies from Korea are participating in consultations. The consultations are centered around Beijing, Guangzhou, and Shanghai in China.

Following last year, there remains strong demand for content co-production, platform distribution, licensing (IP) rights, and character merchandise development. Local participating companies such as Kuaikan, Comicfan, and China Mobile, leading Chinese content platforms and telecom operators, are seeking Korea’s creative animation and webtoon scenarios, designs, and character merchandise.

To facilitate smooth online consultations, KOTRA prepared introduction materials and videos in Chinese containing information about the Korean companies’ major works and collaboration methods, which were sent to buyers in advance.

Kim Sang-mook, Head of KOTRA’s Innovation Growth Division, stated, “Due to COVID-19, content consumption has rapidly increased not only in China but globally. We will continue to provide unwavering support locally overseas so that our content companies can achieve greater success in the global market.”
