[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] On the 6th, the Ministry of Environment held the '2nd Sustainable Business Innovation Forum' jointly with the Korea Council for Sustainable Development Enterprises at the Grand Intercontinental Hotel in Samseong-dong, Seoul.
The Sustainable Business Innovation Forum was first held last year to seek solutions where government and business leaders can contribute together to sustainable development and the creation of national growth engines.
Attendees at the forum included Minister of Environment Cho Myung-rae, Chairman of the Korea Council for Sustainable Development Enterprises Lee Kyung-ho, National Assembly Deputy Speaker Kim Sang-hee, as well as CEOs of domestic and international companies and ambassadors from foreign missions in Korea.
First, a keynote speech by Sunny Burgess, Chairperson of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, titled "New Sustainable Development Norms and Public-Private Strategies in the Post-COVID Era," was presented via video.
Deputy Minister of Environment Hong Jeong-ki delivered a keynote lecture on "Korean New Deal and Industry Cooperation Measures."
Following this, a special discussion was held on the theme "Digital Innovation and Technology of Big Blur Leading Companies Beyond Industry Boundaries," featuring Kim Myung-ja, Chairman of the Seoul International Forum, Shin Hak-cheol, Vice Chairman of LG Chem, and Kim Hyo-joon, Chairman of BMW Group Korea.
Big Blur refers to the phenomenon where the boundaries of existing entities become mixed due to the accelerating pace of change.
In the afternoon, participants engaged in discussions on "Green Industry Development Strategies and Public-Private Cooperation Opportunities for Climate-Friendly Economic Transition." To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the number of on-site attendees was minimized to fewer than 50, and the event was also held online.
On this day, the Ministry of Environment and the Korea Council for Sustainable Development Enterprises signed a "Voluntary Agreement for Leapfrogging to a Green Powerhouse" to create an innovation ecosystem for revitalizing the Green New Deal industry and to support public-private cooperation and the realization of carbon neutrality goals.
This memorandum of understanding includes cooperation matters and implementation measures for the successful promotion of the Green New Deal, such as building a circular economy, transitioning to a decarbonized economy, activating the hydrogen economy, and global policy coordination for green industries.
