Gangbuk-gu, Designation of No-Smoking Zone at Uicheon Stream
Designated No-Smoking Zone for 4.6km Section from Wolgye 2nd Bridge to Ssangwoo Bridge Upper Area... Enforcement Starts February 1 Next Year After 3-Month Guidance Period, 100,000 KRW Fine for Violations
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangbuk-gu (Mayor Park Kyum-soo) designated the section of Uicheon Stream as a no-smoking zone starting November 1.
The designated area spans approximately 4.6 km, from Wolgye 2 Bridge at the district boundary to the upper part of Ssangwoo Bridge (near Samyang-ro 526-13).
All spaces from the top of the embankment down to the riverbed are included in the no-smoking zone. After a three-month guidance period, the district plans to impose a fine of 100,000 KRW starting February 1 next year.
Until now, the Uicheon Stream walking trail has been loved as a resting place for residents and visitors. However, some smokers' cigarette smoke caused discomfort to trail users, and cigarette butts and other litter harming the river's surroundings have raised many issues.
The district plans to not only designate the no-smoking zone but also conduct continuous smoking enforcement and publicity to ensure thorough management.
Mayor Park Kyum-soo of Gangbuk-gu said, “By designating Uicheon Stream as a no-smoking zone, we expect residents’ discomfort from secondhand smoke to decrease,” adding, “We will do our best to spread a no-smoking culture and create a pleasant and safe living environment.”
