Republicans Expected to Keep Senate Majority but Lose 6 Seats in House
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] In the U.S. congressional elections for the Senate and House of Representatives, held alongside the U.S. presidential election, the Republican Party is expected to maintain its majority in the Senate, making it difficult for the Democratic Party to achieve the so-called 'Blue Wave' by securing majorities in both the Senate and the House.
According to foreign media including The New York Times (NYT), on the 4th (local time), in the U.S. Senate and House elections held alongside the presidential election, the Republican Party is expected to retain its majority in the Senate, while the Democratic Party is expected to maintain its majority in the House. In the Senate, the outcomes in six states?Michigan, North Carolina, Maine, Alaska, Georgia, and one other?have yet to be decided, with both the Democratic and Republican parties currently tied at 47 seats each. The Republican Party is generally reported to be leading in these six states, suggesting it will maintain its Senate majority.
In the House, the Democratic Party is expected to keep its majority but is likely to lose some seats. According to the NYT, so far the Democrats have secured 190 seats and the Republicans 181 seats, with 64 seats still undecided. The House of Representatives has a total of 435 seats, and the party holding at least 218 seats becomes the majority. Bloomberg News reported, "The Democratic Party will maintain its majority in the House but will lose at least six seats to the Republican Party." Currently, the House consists of 233 Democratic seats, 197 Republican seats, and 5 others.

Before the election, various polls predicted that Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden would overwhelmingly defeat President Donald Trump, and that the Democrats would win both the Senate and the House, leading to a Blue Wave scenario where the Democrats would control both chambers. This raised expectations of victory within the Democratic Party. However, the actual situation is a nail-biting close race, completely different from the polls.
