Yeosu Police Arrest Cash Collector Involved in Phone Financial Fraud Disguised as Large Loan Refinancing Scheme
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Yeosu Police Station (Chief Moon Byung-hoon) arrested and is investigating A (39 years old, female), a cash collector involved in a phone financial fraud (voice phishing) who impersonated a financial company employee, deceived a victim with a refinancing loan pretext, embezzled 20 million KRW in cash, and fled to Ham-an, Gyeongnam, around 2 p.m. on the 30th of last month.
The police received a damage report around 9 a.m. on the same day stating that the victim had handed over 20 million KRW to an unknown suspect. They promptly launched an investigation, analyzed CCTV footage around the crime scene, and tracked the suspect’s movements, leading to the arrest of the suspect about five hours after the incident occurred.
Additionally, at the scene, the police seized 14.9 million KRW in cash that the suspect had received from another victim. Through further investigation, they confirmed that the suspect had embezzled approximately 140 million KRW from various victims in nine separate incidents using the same method.
Meanwhile, the police have been focusing on arresting suspects and recovering stolen funds, having previously arrested cash collectors B (58 years old, male) on the 17th for embezzling about 15 million KRW in two incidents, C (43 years old, male) on the 23rd for embezzling about 39 million KRW in five incidents, and D (18 years old, female) on the 26th for embezzling a total of about 180 million KRW in 11 incidents using similar methods, with D being detained.
Yeosu Police plan to concentrate investigative efforts on the arrested cash collectors to strengthen the investigation into additional crimes and to apprehend the voice phishing organization members who received the remitted funds.
