Hallasan National Park Jindallaebat Restroom Wins Silver Award for 'Beautiful Restroom'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Chang-won] Jeju Special Self-Governing Province World Heritage Headquarters announced on the 1st that the Jindallaebat Restroom in Hallasan National Park won the Silver Prize (Minister of the Interior and Safety Award) in the ‘22nd Beautiful Restroom Contest’.
The ‘Beautiful Restroom Contest’ is an annual competition held by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Toilet Culture Citizens’ Coalition to improve restroom usage culture, and this year marks its 22nd edition.
The Jindallaebat Restroom in Hallasan National Park is an eco-friendly restroom that expanded infrastructure (electrical facilities) to solve problems such as odor and pest occurrence, and introduced a non-discharge circulating flush system that decomposes excrement and wastewater and purifies it into water quality reusable as cleaning water.
In 2016, in collaboration with Jeju Development Corporation, it received 2.3 billion KRW from the ‘Samdasu Water Source Protection Project Fund’ and was created through design talent donation and technical advice from the country’s top environmental experts.
In particular, the Jindallaebat Restroom reflects a design shaped like Jeju Oreum, harmonizing with the natural environment around Hallasan, and introduced a smart remote control system establishing a year-round real-time operation management system to overcome difficulties in facility management due to its location above 1000m above sea level.
It is also evaluated to have greatly contributed to protecting groundwater upstream water resources and conserving the natural environment of Hallasan through real-time operation management of Hallasan environmental facilities.
Additionally, starting with the pilot operation to improve the Witseoreum natural fermentation restroom to a flush restroom in 2015, it has now completed replacing all high-altitude restrooms within national parks with eco-friendly restrooms for the first time nationwide.
