Volkswagen's First Pure Electric Vehicle ID.3 Achieves Euro NCAP Top Rating
Passenger Protection Assessment 87%, Child Protection Assessment 89%
[Asia Economy Reporter Jihee Kim] Volkswagen's first pure electric vehicle, the ID.3, has received the highest rating of 5 stars in the Euro NCAP test, Europe's new car assessment program. Built on the MEB platform, the ID.3 scored highly in all test categories.
Dr. Frank Welsch, Board Member of the Volkswagen brand and Chief Technology Officer, said, "The results of this Euro NCAP crash test are a great achievement for the entire ID. team," adding, "From the early stages of developing the MEB platform, ensuring a high level of safety performance was one of the most important factors, and the ID.3’s 5-star Euro NCAP rating proves that achievement."
First, the ID.3 received a high score of 87% in occupant protection evaluation (based on adult occupants in the driver and front passenger seats). It scored even higher, 89%, in child occupant protection evaluation. The occupant protection evaluation assesses the level of protection for driver and front passenger seats through frontal and side impact tests, as well as whiplash injury tests, and further evaluates how quickly rescue and escape can be carried out in the event of an accident. The child occupant protection evaluation includes the protection level of child safety systems during frontal and side impacts, the variety of options for installing child seats, and the presence of child protection equipment.
In addition to occupant protection, the assessment also evaluates how well the Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system protects vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists when a collision is imminent. The judges also placed high importance on the standard assistance systems. The ID.3 comes equipped with the lane-keeping assist system 'Lane Assist' and the autonomous emergency braking system 'Front Assist' as standard on all trims, earning a score of 71% in the overall vulnerable road user protection category.
