According to Daegu City on the 21st, a 78-year-old man living in Dong-gu received a flu vaccination at a nearby clinic around 12:00 PM on the 20th and visited a hospital emergency room at 1:30 PM. The man eventually passed away at 12:05 AM on the 21st, shortly after midnight.
The man, who had underlying conditions (Parkinson's disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, arrhythmia atrial fibrillation), had been receiving flu vaccinations annually at the same clinic since 2015, with no reported adverse reactions.
Dong-gu Public Health Center immediately reported the death to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency upon notification from the medical institution where the patient died. Daegu City is conducting an epidemiological investigation related to adverse reactions to the vaccination by visiting the clinic where the vaccination was administered and the hospital where the death occurred.
The clinic provided a list of 97 individuals vaccinated with the same vaccine on the 20th, and a full monitoring is underway. Among the 58 confirmed so far, no unusual adverse reactions have been reported other than mild symptoms such as localized pain. On the same day, two mild adverse reaction reports were filed in Daegu after flu vaccinations, but both individuals have since recovered.
The vaccine administered to the deceased 78-year-old man was "Flu Plus Tetra Prefilled Syringe" supplied by LG Chem Co., Ltd. as part of the free vaccination program for seniors by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. Daegu City explained that the product was not suspected of being exposed to room temperature during distribution nor did it contain white particles.
The causal relationship between the death and the vaccination will be finally determined by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency through a damage investigation committee meeting based on the city's epidemiological investigation data.
A Daegu City official stated, "We will continue to monitor adverse reactions among individuals vaccinated with the same batch number and plan to provide guidance on safe vaccinations."
