Police Arrest Over 28,000 Robbery and Theft Offenders in 3 Months... Many Aged 60 and Above
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The National Police Agency announced on the 16th that it operated a "Concentrated Crackdown Period on Robbery and Theft" from July to September, arresting a total of 32,463 cases and 28,439 individuals. Among them, 1,179 were detained, and approximately 32.7 billion KRW worth of damages were recovered.
During this period, the police focused on cracking down on robbery, theft, stolen goods, and telephone financial fraud offenders. In particular, for telephone financial fraud, a total of 2,498 cases and 1,685 individuals were arrested, marking a 49.1% increase in arrests compared to the previous year.
A significant number of suspects were repeat offenders, with 53.8% having prior convictions. Among them, 47.5% had convictions for similar crimes, prompting the police to strengthen management by collecting intelligence on those at risk of reoffending.
Regarding the age distribution of suspects, seniors aged 60 and above accounted for the largest proportion at 21.2%, followed by those in their 50s at 17.8%, and those in their 20s at 15.8%. For minor offenders committing crimes for livelihood, the police actively referred cases to the Minor Crime Review Committee and supported stable reintegration into the community through linkage with social security systems.

A police official stated, "We concentrated our efforts on eradicating habitual and professional robbery and theft that pose high risks to public livelihood, as well as on preventive and restorative criminal activities." He added, "Based on the analysis of this crackdown, we will continue to carry out preventive activities and crackdowns on robbery and theft, focusing on crime-prone areas and times."
