41st Anniversary of the Buma Democratic Uprising SNS Message... "National Memorial Day Designation Ceremony Held at Busan National University Where the Uprising Began, Deeply Moving"
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] "Today marks the 41st anniversary of the Buma Democratic Uprising. I feel deeply moved that it has been specially designated as a national memorial day and that the second commemorative ceremony is being held at Pusan National University, where the uprising began."
President Moon Jae-in said this in a post on social networking service (SNS) on the 16th. President Moon expressed his gratitude, saying, "I remember the citizens who stood together on the streets of Busan and Masan that day, and I thank those who are preparing the commemorative ceremony and striving to ensure the Buma Democratic Uprising is not forgotten." President Moon, who has a special political and social connection to Busan, emphasized the historical significance of the Buma Democratic Uprising.
President Moon said, "The Buma Democratic Uprising was the catalyst that ended the Yushin dictatorship, which seemed unbreakable. It was a major milestone in the history of South Korea's democracy movement, carrying on the spirit of the April 19 Revolution and keeping the flame of democracy alive through the Gwangju Democratization Movement, the June Struggle, and the Candlelight Revolution," adding, "It was a large-scale uprising where citizens and workers together declared that democracy belongs to all the people."
President Moon added, "The commemorative ceremony alternates between Busan and Changwon. I personally attended the first ceremony held last year at Gyeongnam National University. Today, the Prime Minister will attend."

President Moon said, "We are still writing a new democracy by practicing voluntary quarantine for 'myself' and 'neighbors' and 'freedom for all.' I hope the Buma Democratic Uprising, as a living history, will continue to teach us many lessons and give courage to the citizens of Busan and Changwon who are fighting against COVID-19. I will make further efforts for the truth investigation, compensation and reparation, and commemorative projects of the Buma Democratic Uprising."
