[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] The 25th Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival, which successfully concluded on the 11th, has opened a new era of online festivals.
In particular, on the final day, the ‘Ieumsik’ program surpassed 11,000 views on YouTube. This figure excludes the 600 residents invited online.
This year’s Gangdong Prehistoric Culture Festival was held as an ontact festival, allowing anyone to participate from their desired location, instead of the usual bustling gatherings due to the impact of COVID-19.
The highlight was ‘Ieumsik,’ held at 7 p.m. on the 11th. Especially impressive was the appearance of 600 residents on the large LED screen on stage.
During the performance, when the audience who were simultaneously connected were spoken to, the residents appearing in the split screen of the large 27m wide by 7m high screen responded in real time, enhancing the sense of presence.
Invited singer Yoon Do-hyun, who said, “It was a unique experience to have the audience right behind me and receive immediate feedback,” delivered an emotional performance with passionate energy that pierced the autumn night.
Also, the stage background video realized with 4mm narrow-pitch LEDs delighted the eyes of residents in the front row at home and the living room VIP seats as much as their ears. The jungle background of the a cappella group Harmonize, winners of the World A Cappella Choir Olympics, made viewers feel the living, breathing nature, as comments said it was like “bringing Africa here.”
Furthermore, a special video featuring medical staff and residents struggling to overcome COVID-19 moved viewers deeply, sending encouragement to each other living through this time and raising hopes for the day when vitality returns.
The festival finale was decorated by a drone show. The show began with wishes for the end of COVID-19 and the UNESCO World Heritage registration of the Amsa-dong archaeological site in Seoul. One hundred drones lined up in the dark night sky created aerial displays of words such as ‘Prehistoric Culture Festival’ and ‘Light of the Prehistoric Age,’ as well as images depicting the evolution from prehistoric cavemen to modern humans and comb-patterned pottery designs.
The drone show decorating the night sky drew comments like “An emotion incomparable to fireworks shows” and “It’s amazing to see prehistoric relics depicted with drones, a product of cutting-edge science, evoking a sense of time leap.”
