[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] Murim Paper, the leading domestic printing paper company, has partnered with 'Kakao' to participate in a project to discover new writers and sponsor eco-friendly paper.
Murim Paper has decided to fully support 20,000 copies of first edition printing paper (worth approximately 25 million KRW) for the 10 grand prize-winning works selected in the '8th Brunch Book Publishing Project,' an annual publishing contest held through 'Brunch,' Kakao's content publishing platform.
The paper supported by Murim Paper, 'Neostar Baeksang,' is a printing paper that provides visual comfort, widely used for general books and writing purposes, and is an eco-friendly product certified by FSC, PEFC, KFCC, among others.
A Murim Paper representative stated, "As a leading domestic printing paper company, we joined this project not only to discover new writers and share social value through paper sponsorship but also to promote the sales of books and eco-friendly book paper." The project is supported by leading domestic publishers such as Ghana Publishing, Dasan Books, Mirae's Window, Minumsa, RH Korea, Woongjin Knowledge House, Whale Book, Eunhaengnamu, Changbi, and Camel Books.
Recently, with social distancing measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, reading has been recognized as a representative non-face-to-face cultural activity, and related indicators show an increase in book sales. With Murim Paper and publishers participating in this project, it is expected to strengthen the publishing industry and revitalize the somewhat stagnant printing market.
According to Kyobo Bookstore, sales in the Korean novel category from January 1 to September 20 this year increased by 30.1% compared to the previous year, marking the highest growth rate ever. Interpark also reported a 35% increase in sales of study method-related books during the same period compared to the previous year. This is analyzed as a surge in sales of educational and self-directed learning books for children and adolescents due to the prolonged remote classes.
Amid the forecasted tailwind in the publishing and printing market due to increased book sales, the sales trend of printing paper widely used in general books is also noteworthy. Murim Paper reported that sales of white paper and cream paper, often used for book interiors, increased by about 37% in the third quarter compared to the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the '8th Brunch Book Publishing Project,' with a total prize of 50 million KRW, selects 10 grand prize winners (teams) and up to 5 special prize winners (teams). Grand prize winners receive prize money, book publication, and marketing support, while special prize winners receive prize money and opportunities for VOD lectures and book publication. The application period is until November 1, and any writer active on Brunch can apply.
