This year, bereaved families of fallen police officers were to attend the event in person, making it a historic memorial ceremony uniting civilians, government, military, and police for the first time in 72 years, inviting many citizens and bereaved families to create a place of reconciliation and coexistence.
Due to the impact of COVID-19, the number of attendees was inevitably reduced to around 100 people, leading to the establishment of a non-face-to-face online memorial hall so that people can pay tribute to the spirits of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident victims from their own places.
The online memorial hall can be accessed through the ‘Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Online Memorial Hall’ in the popup zone on the Yeosu City website, where visitors can freely write memorial messages for the victims and suggestions related to the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident.
The city plans to collect the opinions left in the memorial hall and use them later for Yeosu-Suncheon Incident support projects and activities urging the enactment of a special law.
In addition, as part of the non-face-to-face memorial, a moment of silence siren will also sound.
For the second year in a row, at exactly 10 a.m. on the 19th, sirens will sound throughout Yeosu City, allowing citizens who cannot attend the memorial ceremony to have a moment of silence and pay tribute to the spirits of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident victims.
A city official said, “This year marks the 72nd anniversary of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident, and it is very regrettable that many citizens and bereaved families cannot attend due to the impact of COVID-19,” adding, “We ask that more citizens empathize with and participate in the scars of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident and join forces for the prompt enactment of the special law.”
