Laird Extends Final Day of Shriner's Children's Hospital Open, Wins Second Hole with Birdie; DeChambeau's Power Draws Attention; Kim Si-woo Ties for 8th in Korea
[Asia Economy Kim Hyun-jun, Golf Specialist Reporter] "Winner's prize of $1.26 million (14.5 billion won), a 2-year PGA Tour card, and an invitation to next year's Masters."
Martin Laird (Scotland), ranked 351st in the world, hit the jackpot in an invitational event. On the 12th (Korean time) at the Summerlin TPC in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA (par 71, 7,243 yards), during the final day of the PGA Tour Shriners Children's Open (total prize money $7 million), he added a 3-under-par round to tie for the lead at 23-under-par 261 with Matthew Wolff and Austin Cook (both USA). Then, on the second hole of the resumed playoff at the 17th hole (par 3), he finally sank the 'winning birdie.'
This marked his 4th career victory after a long gap of 7 years and 6 months since winning the Texas Open in April 2013. Laird has a special connection with this tournament. He earned his first PGA Tour win here in 2009 after a playoff battle, and in 2010, he finished runner-up after losing in a three-man playoff. Jonathan Byrd (USA) made headlines by scoring a hole-in-one on the 17th hole (par 3) during that playoff, adding to the spotlight. "I always perform well here," he cheered, "This is the result of hard training recently."
'The Hulk' Bryson DeChambeau (USA) shot 5-under-par to finish tied for 8th place (18-under-par 266). He eagled the 15th hole (par 4) with a successful one-shot approach and added five birdies (with two bogeys). On the 4th hole (par 4), he made news again with a massive 395-yard tee shot. From Korea, Kim Si-woo (25) joined the tie for 8th place, marking his first 'Top 10' finish of the 2021 season, followed by Im Sung-jae (22) tied for 13th (17-under-par 267), and Kang Sung-hoon (33, both from CJ Logistics) tied for 43rd (12-under-par 272).
