Notification Check on the Hinge... Galaxy Z Fold3 Has Three Screens
Check Calls and Message Notifications on Foldable Phone Hinge
Strategy to Enhance User Experience by Increasing Hinge Utilization
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Samsung Electronics has filed a patent to increase the hinge utilization of foldable smartphones. The hinge on the Galaxy Z Fold3 is expected to serve as a third display.
On the 11th (local time), according to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and IT media LetsGoDigital, Samsung Electronics filed a patent last March to equip the hinge of the Galaxy Z Fold series with an LED panel that can check phone calls or message notifications.
The hinge display in the patent filed by Samsung Electronics is designed to include LED lighting and finished with a translucent cover, combining white, red, blue, and green lights to express various colors. It displays incoming calls and messages and allows notification checks. When the foldable phone is folded and placed face down, it is difficult to check incoming calls, but if it can be checked on the hinge, the chance of missing them decreases.
LetsGoDigital explained, "It is not known whether Samsung Electronics will integrate this feature into the Fold3, but they are continuously exploring possibilities to enhance user experience."
The hinge is a component that helps freely open and close the foldable display, also called a hinge. Samsung Electronics is expected to seek changes by equipping three displays on next-generation foldable smartphones such as the Galaxy Z Fold3. IT media SamMobile described it as "another example of an edge display separated from the main screen" and "a natural evolution of foldable phones."

There is also growing interest in whether the 'Galaxy Z Fold3' will be equipped with an S Pen. It is known that Samsung Electronics is considering a way to make the Galaxy Z Fold3 compatible with the S Pen. However, since the durability of the foldable display must be improved accordingly to use the S Pen together, it is expected to take some time. At the August Unpacked event, Samsung Electronics Wireless Business Division President (CEO) No Tae-moon said, "The S Pen is the most loved feature of the Note, but we are pleased to see people interested in the foldable phone's functions," adding, "We will continuously reflect customer feedback."
