Ryu Jedong, CEO of Gyomunsa, to Receive the Silver Crown Cultural Medal
Government Awards and Commendations Presented to 29 Contributors Leading the Development of Publishing Culture
Ryu Jae-dong, CEO of Gyomunsa, will receive the Silver Crown Cultural Medal. On the 8th, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced that it will award government honors and commendations to twenty-nine individuals who have contributed to the development of publishing culture. The awards include one Silver Crown Cultural Medal, two Presidential Commendations, two Prime Minister Commendations, and twenty-four Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Commendations.
CEO Ryu has managed an educational publishing company for 47 years, publishing over 2,000 quality books including university textbooks, academic books, textbooks, dictionaries, academic journals, and monographs. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism evaluated that “he contributed to publishing culture by raising the level of academic books and publishing non-commercial academic books on Korean history, folklore, and classical Korean literature.”
The Presidential Commendations go to Kang Mal-sil, CEO of Sagyejeol Publishing, and Joo Byung-oh, CEO of Jigu Culture. CEO Kang is a female publishing activist who has published about 1,700 titles in humanities, social sciences, early childhood, children’s, and youth books. She was recognized for realizing the spirit of the times?democracy, unification, freedom, and equality?through books and leading the popularization of humanities and social science books. CEO Joo has published over 1,000 specialized and secondary school books in language, design, management, and food nutrition over 40 years. The Ministry said, “He contributed to the development of youth education and promoted advanced Korea overseas through the development of Hallyu content.”
The Prime Minister Commendations will be awarded to Lim Soon-jae, CEO of Hanol Publishing, who contributed to quality book publishing and e-book exports, and Jang Joo-yeon, CEO of Gunja Publishing, who has published the most medical books domestically.

The award ceremony will be held on the 13th at the Youth Culture Space JU in Donggyo-dong, coinciding with the ‘Book Day’ celebration on October 11. ‘Book Day’ was established by the publishing industry in 1987 to commemorate the completion date of the Goryeo Tripitaka (October 11, 1251). Every year on this day, the government awards honors and commendations to boost the morale of publishing professionals and promote the development of the related industry.
