Jomyeongrae Inspects Chuseok Recycling Waste Collection Site... "Expanding Support for Collection and Sorting Industry"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] On the morning of the 4th, Minister of Environment Cho Myung-rae visited an apartment complex located in Yeongtong-gu, Suwon City, together with Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young to inspect the status of recyclable waste collection.
The Ministry of Environment has been implementing the "Special Management Measures for Household Waste" from the 28th of last month until the 7th of this month to ensure that holiday waste during the Chuseok holiday period is not accumulated and is promptly processed.
As more waste than usual is expected to be generated due to Chuseok gift packaging materials, local governments have been asked to adjust collection schedules to disperse waste disposal and to expand the operation of public sorting centers.
In accordance with the special management measures, Suwon City has formed a mobile response team and has been collecting and processing waste normally during the Chuseok holiday period, except for the 1st and 2nd.
Minister Cho participated in the collection work with on-site workers, listened to their difficulties due to the surge in recyclable waste and opinions on government support measures, and delivered quarantine supplies such as masks and hand sanitizers.
Minister Cho stated, "Along with fundamental institutional improvement efforts for the entire resource circulation process including production, distribution, consumption, waste discharge, recycling, and processing of products, we will thoroughly ensure that the recycling market downturn does not lead to public inconvenience such as collection stoppages by continuously monitoring the recycling market and expanding support for the collection and sorting industries."
He also discussed with Mayor Yeom, who was present at the site, the recovery plan for the Suwon Resource Circulation Center, which recently suffered fire damage, and emergency waste collection measures.
