Solar Power Generation at Dongkuk Steel Dangjin Plant
[Asia Economy Reporter Park So-yeon] A solar power plant will be established at Dongkuk Steel Dangjin Plant.
On the 28th, Dongkuk Steel signed a memorandum of understanding for the 'Dongkuk Steel Dangjin Plant Solar Power Project' jointly with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (hereinafter KHNP), TM Solutions Co., Ltd., Hyosung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., and S-Energy Co., Ltd. The signing ceremony was conducted in writing due to COVID-19.
Dongkuk Steel will provide idle spaces such as the roof and parking lot of the Dangjin plant, and KHNP and others plan to construct and operate a 13MW-class solar power facility there. Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2021 and be completed by June, after which it will produce approximately 15,900 MWh of electricity annually, enough to supply about 4,200 households.
This is a case of utilizing the surplus space of a large-scale steel plant as a solar power plant. Kim Ji-tak, head of Dongkuk Steel Dangjin Plant, said, "Steel plants like Dangjin have high utilization value as spaces where eco-friendly solar power generation can be carried out without affecting the surrounding environment."
Dongkuk Steel and KHNP decided to use Dongkuk Steel's highly corrosion-resistant steel sheet GIX (magnesium alloy coated steel sheet) for the solar power structures.
