"Catch Counterfeits with AI" Daejeon Technopark Opens Verification Demonstration Lab
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Customs Service announced on the 28th that they have opened the ‘Artificial Intelligence (AI) Illegal Replica Identification Demonstration Lab’ at Daejeon Technopark D-Station in Daejeon Metropolitan City.
The demonstration lab, covering a total area of 288㎡, provides facilities and equipment that allow processing and learning of related data such as photos and drawings of genuine products to identify counterfeit goods that imitate the design of the products.
In particular, since the data corresponds to the core intellectual property of companies, the lab features thoroughly designed and implemented security systems including physical security facilities, communication networks, and access rights settings and management to ensure safe data learning.
The AI illegal replica identification project is one of the AI convergence projects (AI+X) that support innovation by integrating AI into various fields based on the Data Dam, a representative task of the Digital New Deal. Following the selection of the performing company last August, the demonstration lab has been swiftly established to commence full-scale data learning and AI development.
Once the AI illegal replica identification system is developed and utilized, it is expected to significantly contribute to protecting domestic industries by reducing intellectual property rights infringements, which reached 52,000 cases annually (as of 2018), and to preventing safety accidents caused by counterfeit products.
Kang Dohyun, Director of AI-based Policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “With today’s opening ceremony, the development of innovative AI services based on the Digital Dam will accelerate,” adding, “We will expand AI convergence not only in the customs clearance field but also in various sectors such as healthcare and energy.”
