"Citizen-Reformed Police Human Rights"… National Police Agency Holds 'Human Rights Impact Assessment Policy Proposal' Contest
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] The National Police Agency announced on the 27th that it will hold the 'Human Rights Impact Assessment Policy Proposal Contest' from the 28th of this month to November 8th.
The National Police Agency was the first government agency to introduce the Human Rights Impact Assessment system, which reviews the impact on citizens' human rights in advance when drafting or revising laws and policies, and has processed 279 cases since June 2018.
This contest was prepared with the intention of expanding citizen participation in the Human Rights Impact Assessment system, which had previously been conducted internally within the police. The theme of the contest is 'Police Human Rights Reformed by Citizens,' and participants can submit cases or suggestions for improvement based on direct or indirect experiences of human rights violations or irrationalities in various police systems, policies, or practices.
The National Police Agency will select five outstanding proposals and award prize money and certificates, and the selected proposals will be reflected in police policies. Jeon Chang-hoon, the Human Rights Protection Officer of the National Police Agency, said, "We planned to open the Human Rights Impact Assessment system, which was previously conducted only within the police, to citizens in order to reform police administration in a human rights-friendly way by the hands of citizens." He added, "After the contest, we will institutionalize an official channel for citizens to continuously participate in the Human Rights Impact Assessment system."
