"Online Ancestral Rites? Don't Worry About Traffic" SKT Prepares for Untact Chuseok
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Cho] SK Telecom is making every effort to provide stable communication services to customers ahead of the "Untact Chuseok" holiday.
SK Telecom announced on the 27th that it has prepared special measures to provide stable communication services during the Chuseok holiday and will enter a focused management system.
SK Telecom expects that on Chuseok day, October 1st, nationwide data usage will increase by about 25% compared to weekdays, reaching up to 827 TB (terabytes) per hour. Among this, 5G data usage is expected to increase by 25.4%, and LTE by more than 25.1% compared to weekdays.
Additionally, the number of mobile communication service uses (attempted calls) such as calls, texts, and internet searches is expected to increase by 16.7% for 5G and 5.9% for LTE, totaling a 6.4% increase compared to weekdays.
In particular, SK Telecom anticipates that due to the spread of COVID-19, more people will use group video calls through "MeetUs" to check on family members who are far away instead of visiting their hometowns, as well as media services such as AI "NUGU" and OTT "WAVVE." Accordingly, they have completed thorough preparations for customer communication convenience by pre-inspecting wireless traffic and additionally expanding system capacity.
From the 29th of this month to October 4th, SK Telecom plans to operate a comprehensive control room staffed with a total of about 5,600 SK Telecom and ICT family company specialists, monitoring communication status 24/7 and responding swiftly on-site.
Especially, quality optimization work and additional installation of 5G equipment will be carried out at rest areas near highways and terminals where vehicle congestion is heaviest, ensuring customers can use stable mobile communication services with thorough quality management.
