[2020 Asia Construction Awards] Hyundai Engineering Significantly Reduces Pollutant Content with GTL Plant
Asia Economy Grand Prize - Plant Division
Hyundai Engineering, which received the Asia Economy Grand Prize in the plant sector, is a construction company that has ranked first in cumulative overseas orders over the past six years. It provides engineering solutions in various fields such as petrochemicals, industrial architecture, housing, and infrastructure development. Hyundai Engineering is particularly recognized for its outstanding performance in the plant sector. A representative project is the Uzbekistan GTL (Gas To Liquid) plant project. The construction is underway in Kashkadarya Province, about 400 km southwest of Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan.
GTL is a technology that chemically processes natural gas to produce liquid petroleum products. GTL is a complex process that requires advanced technical capabilities because it converts natural gas into high value-added liquid petroleum products such as kerosene, diesel, and naphtha, which are widely used across industries, through chemical reactions. The GTL plant being constructed by Hyundai Engineering will produce petroleum products such as diesel, naphtha, and kerosene using natural gas from the Kashkadarya gas field. The fuel produced through the GTL process contains lower amounts of air pollutants such as sulfur, aromatics (BTX), and heavy metals compared to conventional crude oil refinery products. Total carbon dioxide emissions are also half that of coal and about 70% of that of petroleum, making it recognized as a clean fuel.
Hyundai Engineering’s GTL plant is the fifth project undertaken in Uzbekistan and began construction in December 2016. As Uzbekistan’s first GTL plant, both the site and employees take great pride and responsibility in the project. The contract amount totals $2.62 billion (approximately 3.0331 trillion KRW), of which Hyundai Engineering’s share is about 45%, or $1.169 billion. Upon completion, the facility is expected to produce an annual output of 670,000 tons of diesel, 270,000 tons of kerosene, 360,000 tons of naphtha, and 63,000 tons of LPG. It is anticipated to become a large-scale petrochemical plant producing high value-added petroleum products.
A Hyundai Engineering official stated, "Since winning the $690 million 'Ustyurt Gas Chemical Plant (UGCC) Project' in June 2011, marking our first entry into Uzbekistan, we have secured six projects to date based on strong trust with the local government and clients. We will successfully complete this project as well and demonstrate Hyundai Engineering’s excellent capabilities across all business areas."
